The Miss World 2021 beauty pageant was postponed after 17 people tested positive for Covid-19, including Indonesia’s representative Carla Yules.
Via the official announcement on the page FacebookThe Miss World 2021 final, which was planned to be held at the Coliseum Jose Miguel Agrelot, Puerto Rico, will be rescheduled for the next 90 days.
The decision was taken after meeting with virologists and medical experts hired to oversee the Miss World 2021 event and discussions with the Puerto Rico Department of Health.
“The decision has been made by the event organizers to postpone the global broadcast final at the Puerto Rico Coliseum Jose Miguel Agrelot to be held for the next 90 days,” reads a statement posted on Friday (17/12).
As reported National News, the event was hit by the Covid-19 storm with at least 17 people involved with the Miss World 2021 pageant testing positive for Covid-19.
Miss World also said that there were about 7 candidates who were isolated due to possible Corona virus infection.
“In the case of Miss World, there were 17 who tested positive … yesterday there was talk of seven, but the number is going up,” Puerto Rico’s health department spokeswoman Lisdian Acevedo told Primera Hora.
Acevedo said the number of positive cases of Covid-19 including the contestants as well as technical personnel and all those infected had been vaccinated.
Since Thursday (16/12), organizers said they had added safety measures for the benefit of the contestants, production team and audience, understanding the event increased the risk on stage and in the locker room.
“However, after additional positive cases were confirmed this morning and after consultation with health officials and experts, the decision to postpone was made,” it added.
Furthermore, on the advice of medical experts, the organizers revealed that they would impose a quarantine, pending further observation, tracking and testing.
Only when the contestants and staff are tested negative by health officials and advisors after isolation will the contestants and related staff return to their home countries.
One of the Miss World 2021 contestants who is also infected with the Corona virus is the representative of Indonesia, Carla Yules. Carla Yules was reported positive for COVID-19 on Sunday (12/12/21). The news was confirmed by the Chairperson of the Miss Indonesia Foundation, Liliana Tanoesoedibjo, through a video uploaded on Instagram.
The video, which was uploaded on December 15, 2021, shows the moment when Liliana made a video call with Carla Yules. Carla was also seen asking for support from the community so that she could continue to fight for the name of Indonesia.
This year contestants from 98 countries seemed to participate in the Miss World 2021 beauty pageant. One of them was the first hijaber candidate from Somalia, Khadija Omar.
