Former Trump Chief of Staff before the US Justice for contempt

Washington, Dec 15 (Prensa Latina) Mark Meadows, former chief of staff of former President Donald Trump (2017-2021), will go before the United States Justice for refusing to testify in the investigation into the assault on the Capitol on January 6, they report today Press media.

The House of Representatives voted in favor of the recommendation of the special commission that tries to clarify the events that occurred just over 11 months ago, when a group of enraged Trump supporters tried to prevent the validation of the victory of Democrat Joe Biden in the November 2020 elections.

The vote held the day before received the support of 222 congressmen, including two Republicans: Liz Cheney (Wyoming) and Adam Kinzinger (Illinois), while 208 voted against it.

“Meadows’s actions demonstrate his contempt for Congress, for his former colleagues, and for the integrity of the democratic process. Their evasion forced us to take this action because no one is above the law, ”Kinzinger warned.

On Monday, the House panel unanimously approved (nine votes in favor) the recommendation on the contempt charge against Meadows, who did not testify after his attorney announced that he would stop cooperating with the investigation because it could reveal sensitive information.

A day later, Bennie Thompson, chairman of the commission, stressed during the debate before the vote that it is not about any kind of privilege or immunity.

“It is that Mr. Meadows refuses to comply with the subpoena to discuss the records (information) that he delivered,” he said, according to NBC News.

For its part, CNN reported that the measure against Meadows was the latest effort to penetrate the inner circle of a former president who saw how the US Capitol was attacked by a mob incited by his plot to annul a fair election.

The contempt referral of the case to the Justice Department follows a similar action against former Trump strategist Steve Bannon and is part of the push from the panel that called in more than 300 witnesses for testimony and evidence.
