They expected a “more ambitious” document. According to the Environmental Coordinator of Asturias the protocol against pollution in the west of Gijón approved yesterday by the Governing Board is far from safeguarding the population and to help reduce the serious pollution problem suffered by the residents of this area, affected by industrial pollution, for decades. They assure that it only takes into account four stations: La Calzada, Lauredal (which is not yet in operation), Jove and Santa Cruz, but it does not take into account the other 13 pollution control stations in the council.
They emphasize that one of the usual pollutants in Gijón and the most dangerous and carcinogenic, benzene, is not taken into account. According to the Coordinator, it presents bad values since the batteries of Arcelor-Mittal. In addition, they point out that the protocol does not address the limitations of the WHO in terms of dangerous values of the particles and that it will not take into account the peaks of atmospheric pollution that trigger hospital admissions in Asturias due to respiratory diseases. Miguel Puente, a member of the collective, advocates acting from the beginning and urges the administrations, local and regional, to pressure companies to make the committed environmental investments.

The protocol, which controls air pollution in the eastern zone and activates a series of measures in each case, will enter into force 15 days after its publication in the BOPA. Its activation depends solely on the City Council of Gijón.
