House of Representatives approves increase in debt ceiling

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The U.S. House of Representatives on Tuesday passed a bill to raise the federal government’s debt ceiling by $ 2.5 trillion to around $ 31.4 trillion.

The bill was approved with 221 votes to 209, which allows the United States to avoid default.

The text must now be signed by US President Joe Biden.

This issue of raising the debt ceiling has been opposing the elected Democrats and Republicans for months, while next year elections to Congress (the “midterms”) loom.

Democratic Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said raising the debt ceiling would meet the needs of the U.S. government until 2023.

Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen had called on Congress to raise the debt ceiling before Wednesday.
