Perez responds to Verstappen’s ‘legend’ statement: “He is the legend”

Sergio Perez revealed himself as Red Bull’s Defense Minister during the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. The Mexican took the lead after both Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton pitted for new tires. However, the Dutchman was a few seconds behind the Brit.

Red Bull therefore ordered Perez to stop Hamilton and he did it phenomenally. The Mexican managed to keep the Mercedes driver one lap behind him and thus ensured that the lead that the Brit had over Verstappen was significantly smaller.

Verstappen immediately praised Perez on the on-board radio. “Checo is a legend,” he shouted during the race. RacingNews365 communicated this to Perez. “No, he is the legend. He is now world champion”, was the reaction of the Mexican to various media including RacingNews365.

The Red Bull driver looks further back on his defense during the race. “Lewis had the race under control and Max was there for about ten seconds. I’m very happy that I was able to do something to change the end result. I was running on extremely old tires so I couldn’t do much. But I was able to take a few seconds off Lewis’ lead.”

Perez indicates that he preferred not to interfere in the battle between Verstappen and Hamilton and explains why he did not step aside. “You don’t want to get involved in that fight for the championship. They worked very hard to be where they are, but this is my team. I did it for my team and for Max.”

Why Perez Dropped Out

The Mexican eventually had to park his car early with a mysterious problem. Perez thinks he could have finished on the podium without that problem.

“I think I could have finished second today with how the race has unfolded, but I had to pull the car out of the way because it didn’t look good. That could have resulted in another safety car,” reveals Perez. .

Verstappen took off with the drivers’ title, but Mercedes won the constructors’ championship. Perez is disappointed with that, but is proud of what he has shown this year. “In the end, it’s a shame we didn’t win the constructors’ title, but I’m really happy with the work we’ve done this season.”
