Diabetes Treatment is not Easy because it is Progressive

The clinical picture and complications of diabetes vary from person to person.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — Diabetes as one of the chronic diseases whose number of cases is classified in Indonesia, which is almost 19 million cases. Treatment is classified as not easy because it has a progressive nature.

Chairman of the Executive Board of the Indonesian Endocrinology Association (PB PERKENI), Prof. Dr. Dr. Ketut Suastika, SpPD-KEMD, said that although diabetes including as a disease that has a progressive nature, the clinical picture and complications that occur are different for each person. “The mechanism is complex, complicated and each person has a different phenotype. So, the clinical picture is different with different complications. So, treating it is also not easy,” he said in the Public Discussion of Integrated and Innovative Chronic Disease Management Services held online, Wednesday (15/12).

On the other hand, diabetes can also be related to a failure caused by various aspects such as the patient’s lack of knowledge about the disease and access. In addition, the doctor factor is too many patients.

According to Prof. Suastika, if diabetes complications occur, it will not only bring pain and a high risk of death to patients, but also costs that must be paid by the government and patients. Another thing that also makes diabetes treatment difficult is the system in the form of accessibility of health services for patients, plus the availability of drugs which are actually quite a lot provided through the BPJS mechanism.

“This system is accessibility. Not everyone can access health services. Then the availability of drugs. Actually there are quite a lot of drugs from BPJS, but are they all available in all corners of this country,” said Prof Suastika.

In addition, it is also necessary to have a laboratory, even though it is simple, such as for checking blood sugar, HbA1C and urine. Regarding telemedicine in the treatment of diabetes, Prof. Suastika believes that the presence of this service improves and accelerates access to health services, especially for those with various obstacles.

“Because diabetes is a chronic disease that does not change at any time, not daily, it is appropriate for patients with diabetes to apply for telemedicine services,” he said.
