VIVA – The downturn of the economy Afghanistan and the withdrawal of much of the international aid from the country left farmers and traders there looking for a quick solution. Afghanistan, once famous for its opium, is now holding the title again.
Opium, methamphetamine and heroin re-sprout in Afghanistan whose chain starts with local farmers as reported BBC. Even methamphetamine is being sold in the markets again Taliban which is now the regime of the government does not openly admit it.
Mentioned in the report, media sources said there are at least 3000 kg of crystal methamphetamine produced by more than 500 makeshift factories every day. Afghanistan’s top meth producer is located in the southwestern part of the country.
Even in the desert it is also said to function as a meth trade. Mounds of methamphetamine can also be found in a number of markets. This condition, said the source, became more widespread after the post-Taliban economic crisis returned.
It is known that local farmers also said they chose to grow the raw material for the methamphetamine, known as ephedra, to make the drug ephedrine. Meanwhile, in other parts of Afghanistan, farmers also choose to grow opium. One farmer named Mohammad Ghani admitted that he was busy preparing fields to plant poppy seeds.
“We know it’s dangerous,” said Mohammad Ghani.
But he said they had no other choice. Instead of growing vegetables such as tomatoes or okra, they have to give up most of the money to build wells. Opium then became their choice because it was profitable and sought after by many people to be sold abroad.
