Keechant Sewell Becomes New York’s First Female Police Commissioner

Sewell, 49, has been a police officer for 23 years in Nassau County, a district of Long Island, New York. She now heads the investigative department. If she accepts Adams’ nomination, who will not take office until January 1, she will become New York’s first female and third black police commissioner.

Current commissioner, Dermot Shea, is retiring after 30 years with the New York Police Department. He was appointed police chief two years ago by Mayor Bill de Blasio.
