Tesla Cybertruck – Four engines, driving sideways

After remaining unchanged since it was first shown in 2019, Tesla removed the price and data on the Cybertruck from its website in October. Some thought it was a confirmation that the electric pickup with the special design had been removed from the program of the American electric car manufacturer.

That was not the case. Now there is new information about the car, which is expected to go into production by the end of 2022.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk confirms that the Cybertruck will have four electric motors – one on each wheel.

Four electric motors

“The first cars in production will have four electric motors with ultra-fast, independent control of the power of each wheel,” Musk tweeted last week.

This will steer as much power as possible to the wheels that have the best grip at all times and thus provide the best possible maneuverability. The car with four engines will replace the version with three engines that Tesla has previously planned. Earlier information said that this would have a range of up to 80 miles and cost 69,900 dollars – equivalent to 630,000 kroner.

A less expensive variant with two-wheel drive is expected later.

Sideways like a crab

Musk further says that Cybertruck will have steering on both the front and rear wheels.

«Will have steering on both front and rear wheels. It can not only turn around like a tank, but also move sideways like a crab ». This means that the large pickup will be able to maneuver considerably easier both in narrow streets, in parking lots, in the terrain and not least hatchbacks where it would not otherwise have space.

The fact that Cybertruck gets four engines and four-wheel steering seems to be a response to the fact that competitors such as Rivian and Hummer have already developed this for their models that will go on sale shortly.

New design

Last week, the YouTuber Chile Al100 managed to get a drone recording of a Cybertruck during a test drive at Tesla’s factory in Freemont. The video shows that the car is approaching production and that it has received some changes in the design compared to what we have seen before. Among other things, it now has exterior mirrors, more traditional lights and new bumpers more in line with the regulations for approval.

It may also look like this car is a bit smaller than the version that was shown in 2019. However, this is difficult to judge from the video.

Good news for Norway?

In that case, this could be good news for Norway and Europe. The first edition of the Cybertruck was too large to be approved here at home. Then there was talk that Tesla might make a smaller version for Europe, something Elon Musk later denied.

There will be over 6,000 Norwegians who have paid in 1,000 kroner and reserved a Cybertruck. The latest figures we have seen from May this year show that there are over a million who have reserved the car worldwide.

Not answering

We have asked Tesla Norway if they have an overview of how many Norwegian customers are on the waiting list and whether it has now been clarified whether Cybertruck will go on sale here at home. Tesla has not yet responded to our inquiry.
