Pakistani Taliban members shoot dead police, ceasefire fails

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

A member Taliban from Pakistan shot dead a police officer on Saturday (11/12), a day after the militia group declared a ceasefire with local government forces.

Local police officer Sajjad Khan said that the incident began when two men on motorbikes opened fire on policemen who were delivering a child polio vaccine in the Tank district.

“The man opened fire indiscriminately, killing one policeman at the scene and wounding another,” Khan told AFP.

Another police officer, Kamal Shah, also confirmed this incident. According to him, the shooter fled immediately.

Shortly after, the spokesman for the Taliban in Pakistan, Muhammad Khurasani, claimed that the attack was carried out by its members.

Khurasani stated that they attacked because Pakistani security forces killed several members of the Taliban first. He said the killing violated the ceasefire agreement.

The truce itself was agreed on Friday through the mediation of the Afghan Taliban. The deal was supposed to run for a month, but fell through the day after.

The Taliban in Pakistan itself is different from the group that is now in power in Afghanistan. However, they have a similar history.

The group in Pakistan was formed in 2007 ago. Over the past seven years, the Pakistani government has continued to promote its campaign to eradicate the Taliban in the country.

However, Pakistan’s Prime Minister, Imran Khan, announced in October that his government was in talks with the Taliban. Khan said the talks were being facilitated by Afghanistan’s Taloban.

However, the leader of the Pakistani Taliban, Noor Wali Mehsud, said that there had been no significant progress in negotiations with the government.
