The mayor of Gorinchem would have preferred that municipalities that have never taken their responsibility in the reception of asylum seekers were given an indication. “We are already doing a lot. Then give the tens, hundreds of municipalities that are doing nothing an indication.”
The question is whether Gorinchem can ignore the instructions of the State Secretary. It concerns emergency shelter in a former building of the Tax and Customs Administration, in other words, government real estate. “That’s food for lawyers and I don’t want to focus on that either. I hear everything, you can’t do anything about it until there is some space. But we won’t solve this social issue with that.”
Melissant first wants to talk to the city council and residents to hear what the sentiment is. Moreover, the designation is not officially in yet. “I’ll wait for that first. I don’t know what exactly it says and for how long.”
