The Importance of Stool Examination for Early Detection of Colon Cancer

Colon cancer is easier to treat when it is found early.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — Chairman of the Foundation Cancer Central Indonesia, Prof. DR. dr. Aru Wisaksono Sudoyo, Sp.PD-KHOM, FACP, recommends that anyone check their stool periodically during defecation. This is one way to detect the possibility of colon cancer.

“Get in the habit of peeking at the dirt, don’t let the blood in the feces miss you but you don’t pay attention to it,” said doctor Aru in a health webinar, Saturday (11/12).

In western countries, this cancer usually occurs in people over 50 years old. However, in Indonesia colon cancer it can happen to younger people, those with four heads. He recommends people in their 40s to have a colonoscopy to detect colon cancer.

“If there is no access, then we try to check the feces once a year to see if there is occult blood,” he said.

Aru reminds the importance Colon cancer early detection because it will be easier to deal with when found the sooner. Moreover, the development of tumors into cancer takes a relatively long time, between five to fifteen years.

“So we must be able to detect it early so that life expectancy will be better than being caught at an advanced stage,” said this senior staff member of the Hematology Division of Medical Oncology, Department of Internal Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, University of Indonesia.

Colon cancer mostly arises as a result of lifestyle. He reminded to eat fibrous foods such as fruit and vegetables. Especially for fruit, he suggested consuming not only juice, but also the dregs that are usually discarded when making juice so that the fiber can be absorbed by the body.
