The fire in a residential building on Schörgenhubstrasse in Linz a week ago was likely caused by a smoldering cigarette. The resident, who had 4.5 per thousand alcohol in his blood, is suspected of having caused the fire, the police confirmed in a report on radio ORF Upper Austria. The flames had spread to the roof of the house and the adjoining residential complex on the night of December 3rd.
The drunk man was rescued from his apartment by the fire brigade and taken to the Kepler University Hospital. Two other residents of the apartment building also came to the hospital with suspected smoke poisoning. Two other people were treated on site. The people evacuated from their homes had to be temporarily taken to a senior citizen center.
A smoldering cigarette in the bedroom was believed to be a likely source of ignition on Friday. If the suspicion is confirmed, the charge will be of negligent causing a conflagration. The public prosecutor’s office in Linz expects the police report in two weeks, according to ORF.
