Police in Hamburg say the arrest of a suspect has prevented a major terrorist attack. During an investigation against the 20-year-old man, substances and materials were found that were probably intended for making a heavy explosive.
The man was arrested at the end of August. He has both German and Moroccan nationality. According to The mirror it was known to security services that the man had been radicalized.
Darknet
Security personnel discovered that the man was searching the dark web for a firearm and a hand grenade. These security officers or police officers pretended to be salesmen. An appointment was made and the man was arrested during the ‘transfer’ of the weapons.
The man lived in Wismar but often stayed at his parents’ house in Hamburg. Both homes have been searched. Propaganda videos of Islamic terrorist groups were found as well as explanations about the making of weapons. It also turned out that the suspect had searched the internet for manuals for making bombs.
Materials found
Further investigation revealed that the man in Hamburg also used a cousin’s home. There, among other things, a kilogram of sulfur and potassium nitrate, 500 grams of carbon powder and hundreds of screws and nuts and electrical wire were found. The police assume that he wanted to make a bomb with these materials.
Hamburg’s city council speaks of a “very, very serious matter” of unprecedented magnitude.
Searches have also been conducted at acquaintances of the suspect. Smartphones, PCs and data carriers were seized. The investigation is still ongoing.
