Adif approved the tender for the construction project to suppress the Carpio (Valladolid) level crossing, located at kilometer 21/297 of the Medina del Campo-Salamanca line, for an amount of 3.3 million euros (VAT included). With this action, all the level crossings that were located in the 76 kilometers of length of the railway line will be eliminated. The execution period has been set at 14 months and may be co-financed by the ‘Connecting Europe’ Mechanism of the European Union (CEF).
The works included in the contract include a series of actions that include the construction of a section of new road on VA-801, with an overpass over the railway at kilometer 21/112, exclusively for vehicles; a path for agricultural machinery that allows the crossing over the railroad through the existing overpass on 21/797; the replacement of the existing intersection between the VA-801 road and the Palomar Road and the adaptation of the link between said road and the Cemetery Road; as well as the replacement of a road, since all of them are affected by the modification of the road. For pedestrians, a pedestrian walkway will be built around the level crossing to be eliminated, according to Ical.
The main actions are completed with a provisional situation for the VA-801 highway, so that vehicle traffic can be maintained while the new section and overpass are being built; the lift of the level crossing; the demolition of the 21/146 overpass, and the closing, replacement of affected services and necessary drainage in the works.
This action is part of the actions planned by Adif for the suppression and improvement of the protection of level crossings in the General Interest Railway Network (RFIG) in order to increase the safety conditions of transport infrastructures, both for the road traffic such as rail.
In this sense, Adif is working on the progressive elimination of those level crossings with the highest intensity of vehicle and train traffic, in accordance with current legislation established on this matter.
Likewise, during this process, and in order to guarantee the safety of road and rail traffic at level crossings in service, actions are planned to improve their protection, while new technologies are being analyzed that allow increase your security.
These actions contribute to the achievement of different Sustainable Development Goals: SDG 3 (Health and Well-being), SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure) and SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities).
