Abadikini.com, JAKARTA – The United States Space Agency (NASA) is preparing an exploratory mission to Mars. For this mission, NASA has officially recruited 10 new astronauts.
The 10 astronauts were chosen by NASA from a total of more than 12,000 people who registered for the job.
The ten astronauts consisted of four women and six men. All of them are around 30-40 years old.
These astronauts consist of military pilots, medical physicists, drilling specialists, maritime robotics, doctors, surgeons, NASA aviation experts, and cyclists.
Air Force Major Marcos Berios of Puerto Rico, became one of the candidates selected for NASA’s 10 new astronauts.
Meanwhile, cyclist who has won eleven national championships, Christina Birch, was also selected as one of nine new NASA astronauts.
“I’m so excited to be a 2021 Astronaut Candidate. It just doesn’t seem real to me,” said Birch, a two-time Pan-American champion.
“Maybe until I put on the astronaut suit for the first time, then it feels really real to me,” he added.
The ten astronauts still have to undergo two years of training before they can actually be sent on a mission into space. Various training in spacecraft operations to how to survive in space will color the education of the new astronauts.
It is known that NASA last recruited new astronauts in 2017. So far, the space agency has had 360 astronauts.
“With SpaceX sending astronauts to the International Space Station and other private companies launching tourists on short trips, to moon landing programs, we are in a golden age now from human flight to space,” said NASA chief astronaut Reid Wiseman.
