Chiapas is a Mexican state bordering Guatemala and a major transit point for undocumented migrants trying to enter the United States.
Chiapas officials said the driver of the trailer truck accelerated and lost control of the highway linking the city of Chiapa de Corzo with the state capital of Tuxtla Gutierrez.
The nationalities of the victims are not yet known. The Governor of Chiapas State, Rutilio Escandón, expressed his solidarity with the victims.
“I have given instructions that the injured receive immediate attention and assistance,” he said on Twitter, as quoted by AFP, Friday (10/12/2021).
“Law enforcement will determine who is responsible,” he continued.
Photographs from the scene show the bodies lined up side by side on the sidewalk, covered in white sheets.
