Jakarta, CNN Indonesia —
Ministry of Defence United States of America sent a security assistance package including weapons and ammunition worth US$60 million or equivalent to Rp861 billion to Ukraine.
Pentagon spokesman Joh Kirby said the assistance included lethal weapons such as Javelin anti-tank missiles, and non-lethal weapons.
The security package is designed to strengthen the capabilities of the Ukrainian defense forces, given the expansion of Russian troops near the Kiev border.
This year, the United States has sent about $450 million to Ukraine in security assistance, Kirby said. The aid includes weapons that arrived this week.
On September 1, the President of the United States approved the package to be sent to Ukraine, when the country’s President, Volodymyr Zelensky visited the White House.
Since 2014, the US has provided assistance worth more than US$2.5 billion or around Rp35 trillion to Ukraine. This action coincided with Russia’s invasion and occupation of the Crimean Peninsula.
The US has been monitoring movements at the Ukrainian border which are considered worrying. Washington officials also claimed to have coordinated with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and other European countries to respond to Russia’s stance if they decide to invade Kiev.
On Tuesday (7/12) yesterday, Biden warned Russian President Vladimir Putin about the current tensions, the invasion of Ukraine and the government is preparing a series of severe economic sanctions against Moscow.
