Three films of very different genres: Steven Spielberg’s musical remake “West Side Story”, the science fiction film “Dune” and the deaf drama “Coda”. All three convinced the jury of the American Film Institute (AFI). But also the sports drama “King Richard”, Joel Coen’s “Macbeth” and “The Power of the Dog” by Jane Campion are among the top candidates, as the association announced.
“Don’t Look Up” and “Tick, Tick… Boom!” in the selection
The AFI also has the disaster satire “Don’t Look Up” (Adam McKay), the psychological thriller “Nightmare Alley” (Guillermo del Toro), the romance “Licorice Pizza” (Paul Thomas Anderson), and the musical drama ” Tick, tick … boom! ” selected by Lin-Manuel Miranda.
Oscar winner “Nomadland” was also an AFI favorite
The annual selection by the renowned institute, which is made up of a group of film experts and critics, is considered to be the forerunner of the upcoming Academy Awards. As a rule, several films from the AFI list always make it into the Oscar nominations in the category “Best Film”. Last spring, six films were among the eight candidates for “Best Film” in the AFI selection, such as “Mank”, “Minari” and the later Oscar winner “Nomadland”.
The award is scheduled to take place on January 7th with a ceremony in Los Angeles.
