Dutch government buys top work “De Vaandeldrager” by Rembrandt and allocates 150 million for it

The Banner Bearer – actually a self-portrait by Rembrandt – is part of the private collection of the French banking family Rothschild. He agrees to the sale, says the Dutch Minister of Culture Van Engelshoven.

The French government previously announced that it is waiving a purchase, and is prepared to issue an export license. The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam then announced that it wanted to do everything it could to acquire the painting, but that it did not have enough money.
