But, who would have thought that gout and rheumatism are two different diseases. Rheumatism is part of the autoimmune because the body’s own immune system attacks the joints. While gout is caused by increased levels of uric acid in the blood.
Although the symptoms that appear are the same, you can learn to differentiate between the two diseases specifically. One that is easily recognized is the location of the pain.

“For gout, it is more centralized and appears only when it recurs. But when it comes to rheumatism the pain radiates throughout the body,” said Dr. Kelly A. Portnoff, a rheumatologist at The Portland Clinic in Oregon, quoted by MNC Portal from Creaky Joints, Thursday ( 9/12/2021).
Differences can also be seen from the age factor. In the case of rheumatism, all ages can experience it, although it most often occurs in women in their reproductive years. Meanwhile, gout tends to appear in the late twenties or early thirties; or 70-80 years.
“However, there are some cases of gout appearing early, this is often due to lifestyle factors that increase uric acid levels in the blood, such as a lot of meat consumption or high alcohol intake,” said Dr. Portnoff.
However, when gout appears very old, it is most likely a sign of kidney problems or other health conditions that increase the risk of gout such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and heart disease.
