The symphonic fairy tale “Peter and the Wolf” will introduce young listeners to the world of music and introduce the orchestra’s instruments, this time playing the roles of the heroes of the fairy tale. Pēterītis ‘theme will be performed by the twisting string instruments, the wolf’s horns will play the wolf theme, Pēterītis’ friend’s bird will play the passionate flute, the duck will play a loud oboe, the clarinet will play the grandfather’s smart theme. During the concert, children will learn to hear the sounds of various instruments and connect them with the images of birds and animals in the composition.
Sergei Prokofiev’s world-famous symphonic tale “Peter and the Wolf” was premiered 85 years ago and composed especially for the Moscow Children’s Theater. Since the first recording of the tale in 1936 by the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the work has been published in at least 50 different versions in English and other languages around the world. Together with the world’s most outstanding musicians, celebrities such as Sean Connery, Sting, Bill Clinton, Mikhail Gorbachev, Sharon Stone, Sofia Lawrence and many others have told this fairy tale to the audience. The fairy tale also gave impetus to other art genres – Walt Disney created his animated version in 1946, adapted for television, theater and ballet, and a Christmas and even Halloween version, but in 1975 British musicians Brian Eno, Phil Collin, Garry Moore and others performed “Peter and the Wolf” as a rock opera.
The idea of the Liepāja concert was created by the actor and director Mārtiņš Kalita: “The center of the concert will be the Liepāja Symphony Orchestra in all its fullness and grandeur, Prokofiev’s talented musical material is a great first step for children to learn how different instruments form a unified sound, to learn that each instrument has a role in the score – character, mood, they embody images and events. It will be an enriching experience for the whole family and a challenge to continue listening to these nuances in other compositions as well. I am glad that this will be one of the rare opportunities to enjoy classical music with children, in a production suitable for them. ”
The visual design of the musical production was created by light artist Mārtiņš Jansons and costume designer Liene Rolšteina together with Kalita.
As a prelude to the world-famous symphonic fairy tale, the concert will feature the captivatingly bright overture of Joachino Rossini’s opera The Thief of the Zagata, which will draw young listeners into the luxurious atmosphere of La Scala, Milan’s opera house.
Thanks to the digital possibilities of the concert hall “Lielais dzintars”, the day before, on Friday, December 10, at At 11.00, listeners of the concert program will be able to watch online in other places in Latvia and the world.
