The impact of electricity prices on the economy will be discussed at the extraordinary meeting

On Thursday, December 9, the Minister of Economics Jānis Vitenbergs (NA) convened an extraordinary meeting of the National Economic Council in the format of a video conference to discuss the impact of electricity prices on the national economy, informed Vineta Vilistere-Lāce, Minister of Public Affairs.

She points out that during the meeting, the Minister will listen to the views of companies from various sectors on the business situation, the impact of electricity prices on business development, as well as proposals on how the state can help entrepreneurs.

In its turn, the Ministry of Economics (MoE) will introduce entrepreneurs to the already adopted and planned government decisions to compensate for the rising costs of electricity.

As reported, in November, the average electricity price in the Latvian trade area reached a new historical maximum – 125.39 euros per megawatt hour (MWh), according to the review of the Latvian electricity market prepared by the Latvian transmission system operator JSC Augstsprieguma tīkls.

The National Economic Council is a consultative body established by the MoE, the Latvian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Latvian Association of Local Governments, the Latvian Free Trade Union Confederation and the Latvian Employers’ Confederation to attract industry associations and independent experts. The aim of its activities is to promote the development and implementation of a business-friendly environmental policy in Latvia, as well as to promote the implementation of the principles of sustainable economic development in the country and to promote its process and public participation in it.
