Complaints are pouring in – have you experienced this with your MacBook Pro 2021?

Applies to both models

The SD reader made a comeback on the 2021 models of the MacBook Pro, and represented part of what was one of the big highlights of the new line-up. Now there are complaints about the SD reader, which for some does not work, while for others it provides too slow transfer speeds.

Both MacRumors and 9To5Mac have become well acquainted with the complaints, where it is stated that people struggle with various things related to the SD reader, both in the 14- and 16-inch version.

One of the users has a 14-inch variant that he thinks has a very unstable SD reader, where his MacBook Pro can take a minute to detect that he has inserted an SD card, and that it sometimes gives an error message in the process. He says that he has a relatively new 64GB card that otherwise works great, but which rarely goes into the new machine without crashing in the middle of the process – which sometimes also affects the Finder program which ends up crashing.

Does not help with formatting

And formatting apparently does not help, according to the many users who have complained about various websites and forums. The same people point out that the same SD cards that are not read properly by the built-in SD reader are read using an adapter with a USB-C connection.

The use of other manufacturers, formats and storage space has not helped either, according to one of the users, who reports that he has tried Sandisk, Sony and Samsung from 16GB up to 256GB, UHS-I, UHS-II, micro-SD, FAT32 and exFAT without this is helpful.

Apple has so far not acknowledged that it is a bug and whether it is related to hardware or software. Some of the users state that Apple has responded to them by informing them that they are aware of the problem.
