Australia is joining the boycott of the Beijing Winter Olympics

Morrison said the Chinese government has yet to make any attempts to respond to several issues raised by Australia, including alleged human rights violations.

So it is not surprising that Australian government officials will not travel to China for these games. But Australian athletes will, Morrison told reporters in Sydney.

The White House announced a diplomatic boycott of the Beijing Winter Olympics

– Representatives of the Joe Biden administration will not take part in any events related to the Beijing Winter Olympics in February 2022 due to the “genocide and crimes against humanity” taking place in Xinjiang – White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki announced on Monday.

Official or diplomatic representation at these games would mean that we consider them “business as usual” in the face of the PRC’s gross human rights violations and crimes in Xinjiang, and we simply cannot do that. President Biden told President Xi that defending human rights is in the DNA of Americans, she added.

She added that while US athletes will attend the event and have “100 percent support”, the White House has no intention of “adding publicity” to the games.

The boycott of the Games was widely supported by politicians in Washington, although some Republicans demanded a full boycott, including the withdrawal of US athletes from the event.

The decision is related to the systematic persecution of the Uighurs and other Muslim ethnic minorities in the Xinjiang region of western China, including with the mass confinement of people in “re-education” camps and a policy to reduce the fertility of Uyghur women. According to the US, these practices constitute genocide.

China responds to US boycott of the Olympic Games

China opposes the boycott and has taken decisive measures – Zhao Lijian, spokesman for the country’s foreign ministry, said by Reuters.

He called the US decision a conspiracy to disrupt the Olympic Games. “It is doomed to failure, leading to a loss of moral authority and credibility,” Zhao said in a media briefing in the Chinese capital.

He called on the United States to stop introducing politics into the sport, adding that the boycott was against Olympic rules.
