China Claims World’s Largest Democracy Defeats US

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

People’s Republic China claiming to be the largest democracy in the world beat United States of America.

Quoting Antara in the Chinese Democracy white paper, more than 900 million citizens participated in choosing representatives for members of the people’s congress at the district and city levels in 2016 and 2017.

The white paper stated that nearly 2.48 million people were directly elected to represent districts and cities at the people’s congress. Currently, public participation in the election has reached 90 percent.

The white paper entitled “Success of Democracy” was published and launched by the Information Office of the Chinese Government Council (SCIO) since Saturday (4/12).

The launch of the white paper was claimed to be intentionally to precede the implementation of the Democracy Summit held by the United States on Thursday (9/12) to Friday (10/12).

The white paper emphasizes the leadership of the Chinese Communist Party (CPC) in the democratic process in the country with a population of 1.4 billion people.

China claims the country’s democracy is broader, more genuine and more effective than US democracy. US politicians represent interest groups, but Deputy Secretary General of the Standing Committee of the Chinese National People’s Congress (NPC) Guo Zhenhua said that in China the whole democratic process guarantees changes in people’s lives.

Meanwhile, spokesman for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) Zhao Lijian added, democracy is built on the history of a country and adapted to the situation of local people.

“Democracy is the right of all nations, not the prerogative of a few. There are different forms of democracy and no model fits all countries. It would be very undemocratic to measure the world’s diverse political systems with one benchmark,” he said at a regular press briefing in Beijing, Monday (6/12).

The publication of the white paper is aimed at answering various US accusations against China so that it contains more about the comparison of the success of development programs in the two countries, including success in overcoming the COVID-19 pandemic and poverty alleviation.
