It is safe to combine vaccines against covid-19: Asociación Mexicana de Vacunología

Combining vaccines against covid-19 of different brands, called “cross immunization”, is a practice that is endorsed by the World Health Organization (WHO), as well as by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for its acronym in English and by the European Medicines Agency (EMA), informed Excelsior Rodrigo Romero Feregrino, coordinator of the Mexican Association of Vaccination (AMV).

The specialist explained that mixing biologics as reinforcement – regardless of the laboratory that developed them – has the objective that people regain the level of immunization they had achieved with the two previous doses, so as not to become seriously ill and avoid dying, if they arrive to spread from SARS-CoV-2 virus.

And in this case, immunity is achieved immediately after the third dose because there was already protection with the previous scheme.

“The WHO tells us that it recommends that people who gave them Sinovac or Sinopharm; for example, they are given another vaccine at six months and if there is not one, the one in stock is applied.

“So, both the WHO, the FDA and the EMA are considering that another vaccine can be applied and that there are no safety problems because there are already several studies that have shown that it does not hurt and it is being seen with which combination it is better. response, but in general, it has been shown that all existing vaccines are having a good response in the booster regardless of which vaccine was given first. So, the recommendation is that if a person is going to put on a reinforcement, put the one in existence, “he explained.

After the Government of Mexico City announced that this Tuesday it begins the application of a third dose for adults over 60 years of age who live in the Tlalpan mayor’s office, who, regardless of the biological injected, will be administered the AstraZeneca vaccineRomero Feregrino pointed out that there are also no adverse effects from the combination, beyond the discomfort that the first immunization scheme could have caused.

“These are the same side effects that people had with the first or second dose of vaccination, such as arm pain, tiredness, general malaise, or overnight fever.

“And it is important to get the booster with the vaccines that are in Mexico, regardless of the combination. Because what has been seen, especially in older people and with some diseases, is that as time passes, after the second dose, the level of antibodies falls and these increase when the reinforcement is applied and consequently the effectiveness of the vaccine ”, explained the Coordinator of the Mexican Association of Vaccination (AMV).
