Kåre Willoch is dead

Norway’s former prime minister, Kåre Willoch, has passed away. He turned 93 years old. This is confirmed by the Conservatives.

Willoch died Monday morning. He fell asleep quietly in his home on Ullern.

It is with great sadness that the Conservatives today received the sad news of Kåre Willoch’s death. Our thoughts now go first and foremost to Anne-Marie, the children, the grandchildren and the rest of his closest, says Erna Solberg.

Right bauta

Willoch entered the Storting in 1957, aged 29 years. In the period 1981 to 1986, he was Prime Minister of Norway, when the “right-wing wave” hit the country. He was the Conservative Party’s party leader from 1970 to 1974.

– Kåre Willoch is one of the greatest politicians of the post-war period. He influenced the Conservative Party and he influenced Norway from the 1960s until recently. He was a prominent prime minister, who was a leader in the modernization of Norwegian society. His community involvement was broad and deep, and lasted a lifetime. We all have a lot to thank Kåre Willoch for. His death is a great loss for political Norway, says Solberg, and adds:

– Kåre had razor-sharp opinions and analyzes, but the form was always amiable. Strong in content, mild in form, was a rule of thumb he himself always followed. I’ll miss him.

“Everything in moderation”

After his political career, the Conservative Party was county governor of Oslo and Akershus, from 1989-1998. In all his years he has written books and participated in the public debate, on national and international issues.

Before his 90th birthday, he, together with the then Minister of Trade and Industry Torbjørn Røe Isaksen, published the book “Everything in moderation”, about conservatism, populism, environmental protection and major international and global challenges.

In many interviews over the years, Willoch has said that a sober lifestyle, moderation, healthy food, little alcohol and enough sleep are the reasons why he stayed so healthy, for so long.

In April 2016, however, he suddenly became ill, and had to be rushed to a hospital in Oslo. Here it was discovered that the former prime minister had cancer. In retrospect, he thanked his wife for doing as well as she did.
