Diederik Gommers cautiously shares good news: “This may be the beginning of a decline”

He reports this on Saturday evening after seeing the shift at Erasmus MC.

Tightened measures

The corona figures have risen sharply recently, the Netherlands turned dark red on the corona map and the measures were therefore sharpened again. Non-essential shops and catering will close earlier, we are wearing face masks again in many places and at home we can only receive four people. Not a good prospect, with the holidays approaching.

Positive news

Yet there is a glimmer of light in the darkness, Diederik Gommers reports cautiously on Instagram. The chairman of the Dutch Intensive Care Service writes that he sees a decrease in patients with corona in the hospital. And that makes him positive.

Beginning of a decline

“The second day in a row we see that there is slightly less influx of Covid patients in hospitals and ICUs. Maybe I’m laughing too soon and of course we’ll have to wait and see if this continues. The ICs are overcrowded, but this may be the start of a decline…”, according to Gommers.

extra beds

He continues: “I started my day well because the employees of the operating complex help us to open extra IC beds in the Erasmus. As a result, we can help colleagues from the region again today with taking over Covid IC patients because they no longer have a place.”

Press care

However, he emphasizes that the pressure on healthcare is still high. “Nurses clearly indicate that it is very difficult and that this should not take too long. That is of course true and that is why we do this together. I do hope the decline continues. Happy Sinterklaas party!”, says Gommers.
