30:31! Handball third division Wolfsburg is 71 seconds short of the first point

At the first round final it almost worked with the first point! The third division handball players at VfL Wolfsburg were now subject to a wafer-thin 30:31 (16:19) after nine defeats, some of them significant, at HSC Hannover. The decisive goal for the hosts came 71 seconds before the end.

Sure, a narrow defeat hurts, but it should give Wolfsburg courage. “I see the positive, the players are developing. But of course they are bitterly disappointed at first,” said VfL coach Oliver Bült. VfL, in which Celina Friede made her season debut in goal, fought back again and again, and did not give up when Hanover (with ex-VfL trainer Thomas Löw as coach) scored three or four goals away.

After goals from Lena Witzke and Lara Neumann, Wolfsburg was in the lead for the second time in the 54th minute – 29:28. Bitter: Wolfsburg missed the 30:28, then paused on the return move – 29:29. Jette Holzkamp equalized again at 30:30 (58th), but for a long time VfL did not win the first point – also because the referee team, with whose performance Bült was anything but satisfied, at the last free throw for Wolfsburg let the seconds run down “You corrected the HSC coverage three times, then the time was up. We couldn’t throw any more …”

It was the last first round matchday, but VfL still has the catch-up game against PSV Recklinghausen on December 18 (7pm). Before that, however, the second half of the season starts on Saturday (3 p.m.) at SG Kirchhof.

VfL: Ruppelt, Friede – Matte, Neumann (4/1), Kusian (7), Wöhner (2), Holzkamp (4), Fanslau (3), Wagner, Witzke (10/1), Liebing, Tauker, Meyer, Kosub.
