When the lights turned green for the F2 feature race, Theo Pourchaire fell silent. The Frenchman started on P3, which meant that many drivers behind him had to avoid him. Enzo Fittipaldi failed to do so. The Brazilian started way back, so he was already on high speed when he got to Pourchaire.
Fittipaldi clapped full from the back of Pourchaire’s F2 car. The havoc was enormous and the race was immediately stopped. Ambulances were called in to free the two drivers from their cars. They do not appear to be in life-threatening condition and were both transported to hospital from the track. There are, however, concerns about Fittipaldi’s legs.
The F2 race continues after a long hiatus. There will be another 20 minutes + 1 lap to drive. The mandatory pit stop still applies and half points will be awarded.
Update: The FIA has made it clear in a press release that both drivers were conscious and had been removed from their vehicles by professionals. They have been transported to the hospital.
