Ban on heated terraces in Lyon: the boss of Café 203 is resisting

The individual heaters of the Café 203 terrace were still on this Wednesday, December 1. An incongruity in Lyon when the municipality decided to ban these devices on November 19 to fight against global warming. “Our collective responsibility is to move towards more sobriety in the use of energy and resources”, assures the city.

But the measure does not convince Christophe Cédat, recalcitrant boss of coffee. He describes himself rather as an “ultra-citizen who practices civil disobedience”. “My heaters are always off and it’s up to the customer to choose with a switch to turn them on or not,” he explains. Banning them does not change global warming in the sense that the electricity used is of nuclear origin. “

Meters to “objectify” your consumption

For the moment, Christophe Cédat has not received any ticket. He also says he is ready to remove them “on one condition”: “Everywhere in France, there are similar heaters in supermarkets and warehouses. If we tell them to take them off, then I’ll do the same. In the opposite case, I do not see how my activity, more than the others, could do without heaters. “

In spring 2022, the ban will become national. But the cafe owner does not intend to change. “Instead of dealing with the municipal police, it will be the national”, he laughs. From this Monday, meters will be installed in his establishment to “objectify” the energy expenditure of his devices. As for the arrival of plaids in place of resistance, it is not for tomorrow. “When a plaid passes over at least ten people during the day, during a Covid period, it’s almost indecent,” he concludes.
