In the Myanmar city of Yangon, soldiers deliberately drove a car into demonstrators, Myanmar Now reports. According to the independent news site, at least five civilians have been killed. Eyewitnesses speak to Reuters news agency of dozens of injured.
The incident happened during an unannounced demonstration against the military rulers. Since the military leadership staged a coup in February, an estimated 1,300 protesters have been killed by security forces. Opponents of the regime therefore opt for short, unannounced ‘flash protests’ in relatively small groups.
Running protesters
At such a demonstration in the largest city in the country Yangon, the army intervened again this morning, Myanmar Now writes. Just minutes after the start, soldiers with a jeep are said to have rammed into running demonstrators. Photos and videos of bodies on the asphalt can be seen on social media.
