Social media footage shows residents fleeing as a giant ash cloud rises behind them.
Meanwhile, the regulatory body has warned the airlines about the ash column, which rises to a height of 15 km.
The volcano, which rises 3676 m above sea level, previously erupted in January. Mount Semeru is one of the nearly 130 active volcanoes in Indonesia.
