People who appear healthy can also become infected with HIV, says Dr Jain. “Once HIV turns into AIDS then it may show up in early symptoms like unexplained fatigue, fever, sores around the genitals or neck, pneumonia, etc,” he added.
Describing the symptoms, Dr Chowti said, “During stage 1, within 2-3 weeks of being infected, about two thirds of people will develop a flu-like illness. You can have fever, chills, rash, night sweats, muscle aches, mouth sores, sore throat, fatigue, and lymph nodes.” These symptoms can last from a few days to a few weeks.
“Stage two, also known as clinical latency, may not show any specific symptoms. This stage is also called chronic HIV infection. It could go on for a long time and maybe last for 10 years too.”
“The third stage is AIDS which results in a weakened immune system. Symptoms can include rapid weight loss, recurrent fever, night sweats, unexplained extreme fatigue, swollen lymph nodes, chronic diarrhea, sores in the mouth and genitals, pneumonia, nervous disorders, Depression, memory loss and can also manifest on the skin in the form of rashes,” he added.
