The responsible EU institutions report a total of 59 cases registered in the 11 Member States of the bloc. The Netherlands, 16 in Portugal and 9 in Germany are the most infected with the new strain.
At the same time, experts allow the possibility that the new strain of covid virus is spreading faster for several weeks. There are other suspicious cases in Europe involving travel to southern Africa.
To date, no cases have progressed to serious illness or death.
The first cases were also registered on Wednesday in Norway, Switzerland, South Korea, Brazil, Nigeria and the USA, which had a negative impact on stock prices on the New York Stock Exchange. Existing and planned national restrictions can significantly reduce economic activity worldwide.
CONTEXT:
Scientists in the Republic of South Africa said on November 24 that they had found out a new variant of the Covid-19 virus with a large number of mutations due to a rapid increase in infections. In South Africa, the worst affected country in Covid-19, the number of new infections reported in a single day has increased tenfold since the beginning of November, from 106 to around 1,200.
In response, many countries, including European Union (EU) Member States, have suspended flights from southern Africa. The Government of Latvia has imposed travel restrictions on eight African countries.
Scientists believe the new variant may be more contagious than the Covid-19 virus delta or Indian variant, as well as more resistant to current Covid-19 vaccines. The 15th letter of the Greek alphabet, omicron, is used to denote the new type of virus.
