Palace Responds to MPR Requests to Fire Sri Mulyani: That’s Jokowi’s Business

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

The palace responds to the urging of a number of leaders MPR RI to fire the Minister of Finance Sri Mulyani. The insistence was conveyed by Bambang Soesatyo et al because Sri Mulyani cut the MPR RI budget for next year.

Minister of State Secretary (Mensesneg) Pratikno emphasized that the authority to remove ministers rests with President Joko Widodo. He did not comment much on the pressure from the council members.

“If that’s the president’s business regarding the appointment and so on, the change of ministers,” said Pratikno at the Presidential Palace, Jakarta, Wednesday (1/12).

On that occasion, Pratikno also said that there are no plans yet reshuffle cabinet. He denied the issue of a cabinet reshuffle that would be held on Wednesday (8/12) which coincided with Wednesday Pon in the Javanese calendar.

Pratikno said the government was focusing on dealing with the Covid-19 pandemic. He asked his colleagues in the cabinet not to be influenced by the public reshuffle issue.

“As far as I know there is no such plan. So basically all ministers will continue to work as usual, all Deputy Ministers will continue to work,” said Pratikno.

Previously, Deputy Chairperson of the MPR Fadel Muhammad proposed that President Joko Widodo fire the Minister of Finance Sri Mulyani. The proposal was disclosed because Fadel did not accept the cuts in the MPR budget.

Fadel is also disappointed with Sri Mulyani who likes to cancel the meeting agenda. He said Sri Mulyani was incompetent in managing sustainable government policies.

“So we, on behalf of the leadership of the MPR of the Republic of Indonesia, propose to the President of the Republic of Indonesia to dismiss the sister of the Minister of Finance,” said Fadel at a press conference at the Parliament Complex, Jakarta, Tuesday (30/11).

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Finance emphasized that cutting the budget for the MPR RI and other government institutions is a must and cannot be avoided. The reason is that the government is currently focusing its budget on assistance in handling Covid-19.
