New WhatsApp feature: huge change for group chats?

WhatsApp seems to be serious about its new group chat feature! In the future, the communication in your groups could change significantly as a result of reactions. As WaBetaInfo reports, the messenger will soon start rolling out the new feature.

  • New feature for WhatsApp should finally bring message reactions
  • Feature will be usable in direct messages as well as in groups
  • Rumor has it that WhatsApp will start rolling out soon

Information from WABetainfo confirms again that the WhatsApp is working on reactions for messages! Years after other competitors and even the messaging apps of WhatsApp parent Meta (formerly Facebook) implemented similar features. This information leaked a few months ago, now there is new information about the rollout.

A lot has been happening functionally at WhatsApp recently. The better multi-device support, the creation of stickers via WhatsApp Web, new desktop apps and – finally – the long-awaited reactions. The function has long been requested by users, as it is very popular in Facebook Messenger, but also on Signal, Discord, Slack and Instagram.

Even if we don’t yet know when the new feature will come, there are first screenshots of the reactions. This should be possible both in group chats and in direct messages. The feature will change the messaging game especially for group chats, since multiple reactions to a single message will no longer clog the entire group chat.

Reacting to messages works in a similar way to other platforms: by tapping and holding a message and choosing between the available emojis. A bug in a previous beta demonstrated the functionality, but it did not allow actual responses. However, you have to be careful when choosing the emojis, as you can only react once to each message.

We also know that the responses will not be anonymous; You will be able to filter the reactions by emojis and see which emoji individual users have selected.

What will the reactions be like?

The upcoming reactions will use a series of predefined emojis, which range between the abundance of emojis from Messenger and the “Heart Only Likes” from Instagram. For now, responses will include “thumbs up”, “heart”, “laugh”, “surprised”, “sad” and “praying hands” emojis, but that is subject to change.

The initial selection of emojis is not as extensive as with Messenger, where you can choose from all available Facebook emojis, or as with Discord and Slack. There, users can even create their own emojis and fully customize the reactions. But it’s a welcome step forward and covers a wider audience on the platform.
