This Monday began in Villa Mercedes the 1st Alfalfa Expo organized by San Luis Logística, which is in charge of an ambitious pasture export plan, which also serves to remedy water excesses in the Morro Basin. The appointment continues this Tuesday in the Don Hugo field, 600 hectares that Sapem Alfazal rents on Route 8 to carry out tests and in which there are 300 destined for production.
The activity, which had more than 300 registered, began with a dissertation by Mario Funes, an INTA specialist, and the Alfazal technical team, who gave an overview of “Alfalfa in San Luis and the region, and local trials” . They provided the data collected so far from the seven varieties that were implanted at the meeting venue.
Then, the agronomist Roberto Rossanigo, invited by Agvance WL Alfalfas, referred to the implantation, management and genetic potential of the pasture, with an eye on new technologies. It was a very interesting talk for local producers, who must reach a high standard to be able to export to the Middle East (at least 18% protein), where Saint Louis has already managed to open some markets in Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.
There is no ideal variety of alfalfa, it depends on each climate and soil. Here the best are the intermediate group. Mario Funes
In the third shift, the engineers Juan Cruz Colazo (INTA) and Orlando Butta (from the Phosfértil company) showed everything related to fertilization, comparing the traditional methods with liquid phosfértil, a preparation with soluble phosphorus that, finding assimilable phosphorus contained in it completely diluted, it proved to be immediately available both for plants and for incorporation into the soil substrate.
After a break for lunch, it was the turn of Federico Sánchez, from the agricultural machinery firm Claas. His explanation revolved around the “Processes to make exportable quality hay”, referring to cutting and windrowing, to which he added a comparison between propeller machines and mowers. Alfazal technicians carry out this process in the field, to help producers harvest the alfalfa, which will then enter the compactor that the firm has on the premises of the Logistics Activities Zone.
Speakers. Federico Costanzo and Mario Funes spoke about the varieties that are developed in San Luis.
Sánchez remained in the center of attention to close the first day in the field, this time together with Alfazal’s technical team and specialists from another machinery company, Massey Ferguson. They showed the variety trials in the field, the dynamics of alfalfa cutting and its raking.
This Tuesday will be the last day. Agronomist Claudio Sáenz, from INTA San Luis, will show how the Morro Basin can go from being a problem to an opportunity. Then Carlos Ranftl will talk about solar irrigation. At noon, the Alfazal Foreign Trade team will show the progress of the export and will explain the quality that the plant requires.
