President Vladimir Putin has stated that Zircon will have a speed nine times faster than sound and a range of 1,000 kilometers. Putin has stressed that the deployment will significantly increase the capacity of Russia’s forces.
Zircon is intended to be part of the equipment on Russian cruisers, frigates and submarines. It is one of several hypersonic weapon systems under development in Russia.
The Kremlin has made modernizing the country’s arsenal a high priority. This has especially happened in the wake of Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014. Since then, the country’s relations with the West have been marked by growing tensions.
