NVWA warns: life-threatening weight loss drug offered

There are indications that weight loss products containing the dangerous substance DNP contain, are offered online from the Netherlands. People can die after ingesting 1 to 3 grams of DNP per dose, according to the organization.

Resources with DNP are not available through regular web shops, but are marketed via social media and the dark web.

Users deceased

NVWA inspectors and investigators are conducting a criminal investigation into a possible Dutch provider. They started this after a report from the United Kingdom.

Previously, people in the Netherlands, France and the United Kingdom were hospitalized because of the use of the stuff and people have even died as a result.

It is not the first time that the NVWA has sounded the alarm about DNP. That happened in 2015 and 2017 as well. The substance 2,4-dinitrophenol (DNP), also called Dinosan, Dnoc, Solfo Black, Nitrophen or Aldifen and Chemox, has been used in the United States as a medicine for obesity in the past.

Bodybuilders, among others, also use it to reduce the subcutaneous fat layer. Even at lower intakes than the lethal 1 to 3 grams of DNP per dose, adverse effects can occur such as skin rash, cataracts and consequences for the heart and blood vessels and the nervous system.
