Homer mentions Meliboia in the Second Song of the Iliad, in the so-called catalog of ships. In this passage, Homer lists all the Greek cities that took part in the campaign against Troy under King Agamemnon. However, the city is also mentioned by other ancient Greek writers in their later works, but the exact awareness of its location has disappeared over time.
On one hill near the port of Agiokampos in the province of Larissa, Greek archaeologists came across the Acropolis, a fortified city of about 55,000 square meters. Archaeologists have discovered a number of objects in the new site, including pottery, referring to the name of the ancient city. Therefore, they believe that it could be Homer’s Meliboia.

Archaeological remains, however, are considerably younger than the epic Ilias, and experts date them to the Hellenic period, which corresponds to the third to first centuries BC. Archaeological research is still in its infancy, experts have only been able to map the remains of one building. Work will continue next spring as the weather improves.
There were also long disputes about the existence and location of the city of Troy, against which the Greeks were campaigning. The city was discovered in the second half of the 19th century by German archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann on Hisarlik Hill in Turkey. Although he misinterpreted the results of his research, it turned out that the city of the Iliad really stood on this site – later confirmed by more modern archaeological research.
