As one of the two best group runners-up, Sweden’s Davis Cup team is ready for the quarterfinals of the tennis team WC – for the first time since 2011.
There, either the Russian national team or the home nation Spain stands for the opposition.
3-0 against Canada and 1-2 against Kazakhstan was enough – with 4-2 in matches and 9-4 in sets, Sweden secured the promotion as group runner-up. It was clear on Sunday, when the last matches in all six groups were played.
– Fantastic fun! When we qualified for the Davis Cup Finals almost two years ago, it was my first goal, which I thought we would have a good chance of achieving. With a little fluency we could also have won the group, but now we are in the quarterfinals anyway. And the way the guys have played, I think we deserve the place, says Davis Cup captain Robin Söderling.
Not since 2011 has Sweden been in the quarterfinals of the Davis Cup.
– We are a small country that has had fantastic tennis success for a long time. It’s incredibly fun to be back there again. We have a very good team today, maybe not as wide a top with as many players to choose from as other countries have. But we do prove to do it very well, says Söderling.
The quarter-final, which consists of two singles matches and a double, will be played on Thursday 2 December at 16.00 in Madrid. There awaits the winner between the home nation Spain and the Russian national team, which at the time of writing is making up for the group victory in Group A.
Ready for the quarterfinals are also the group winners Kazakhstan, Great Britain, Croatia, Italy and Germany.
