Thirteen travelers who arrived at Schiphol airport in the Netherlands from South Africa on Friday are already infected with the omikron variant of the corona virus. This is reported by the Dutch National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM).

A total of 624 travelers who returned from South Africa on Friday were tested by the local municipal health service (GGD). 61 travelers have taken a positive corona test and are in isolation in a hotel. Thirteen of these were found to be infected with the omikron variant, but there may be even more. The investigation has not yet been completed.
The Dutch Minister of Health Hugo de Jonge calls on travelers who have been in southern Africa since Monday to be tested immediately. These people are subject to a quarantine obligation. The GGD will check whether the travelers are actually isolating themselves after their arrival in the Netherlands.
