Quoted from disdik.grobogan.go.id, World AIDS Day was first coined in August 1987 by James W. Bunn and Thomas Netter.

The date of December 1 was chosen to get maximum coverage from the western media, especially after the end of the US Election.

At that time, not all people understood that AIDS could be experienced by anyone because there was a stereotype that AIDS sufferers were identical to gay, bisexual, or injecting drug users.

In addition, Bunn and Netter felt that December 1 was quite long after the election and quite close to the Christmas holiday, so December 1 was basically a dead date in the news calendar.

Thus the date is the right time for World AIDS Day.

On June 18, 1996, an “AIDS Lifeline” project was awarded the “Presidential Citation for Provate Sector Initiatives”, presented by President Ronald Reagan.

Bun was then asked by Dr. Mann, on behalf of the US government to take two years off from his reporting duties to join Dr. Mann and help create the Global AIDS program.
