Measurements in Krefeld also speak for a revitalization of the inner city.

The managing director of the German Retail Association (HDE), Stefan Genth, told the German Press Agency that retailers were optimistic, “a highlight in the Christmas business” this weekend, despite the Christmas markets that are closed in many places and the 2G or 3G restrictions that apply in some federal states to be able to set. With its hygiene concepts, distance rules and especially the mask requirement, retail offers a safe shopping experience.

“For many companies, this Christmas business is about saving a difficult year to some extent,” emphasized Genth. Because the last two months of the year are traditionally the best-selling for many retailers. Classic gift industries in particular, such as the watch and jewelry trade or the toy trade, generate more than a fifth of their annual turnover in November and December.

The HDE is expecting retail sales – online and stationary – of almost 112 billion euros in the last two months of the year, an increase of two percent compared to the previous year.

The opening of the Christmas markets in the inner cities of North Rhine-Westphalia last weekend had already resulted in a noticeable revival. In the first three days after the markets opened, the number of visitors in the city centers rose by an average of 25 percent, reported the company Hystreet, which specializes in measuring visitor frequencies in shopping streets. The 29 percent increase in visitors was the strongest last Saturday.

Hystreet relies on measurements made with laser scanners of the number of visitors in shopping streets in the cities of Aachen, Bergisch-Gladbach, Bielefeld, Bochum, Bonn, Dortmund, Düsseldorf, Essen, Krefeld, Mönchengladbach and Paderborn.
