In November at the latest, many campers are preparing their vehicles for “hibernation”. No rude awakening follows with these tips.
The experts from the Austrian Camping Club (ÖCC) know exactly how to get caravans and mobile homes undamaged through the winter.
Parking space
The best option is a dry, well-ventilated room. However, if you have to park outdoors, you should look for a parking space near your place of residence – for spontaneous short vacations or if small repairs are necessary. Tarpaulins should be placed on the vehicle in such a way that the ventilation openings are not covered. The trailer coupling should also be protected.
Outdoor maintenance
The sub-floor should be cleaned and checked for damage and any paint damage repaired. Maintain rubber and door seals with silicone and grease the joints of the brake rods and the hinges of the crank supports.
Gas system
At the end of the season, the gas bottle must be closed, disconnected from the supply network and the protective cap put on. It is also advisable to plan an appointment with an official gas testing center for the time after winter.
Living room
Wintering should always be accompanied by a general cleaning of the living area. This includes removing all perishable food from the vehicle. Set up seat cushions and mattresses to prevent stains from condensation. Commercially available dehumidifiers can be set up in the living room and checked and emptied at least once a month. In the case of large mobile homes, it is advisable to set up roof supports to relieve the static load on the roof. This prevents damage from excessive snow loads.
Water system
Stubborn algae and bacteria deposits can be removed with special cleaning agents from specialist dealers. Then completely empty the water tank and lines as well as pumps, filters, hot water boiler and shower head. Alternatively, the water system (this also includes flushing the toilet and holding tank) can be made frost-proof with an anti-freeze. Important: when filling the pipes, set all water taps to the middle position so that both hot and cold water pipes are protected.
Electricity
If it is not possible to supply the vehicle with power over the winter, the supply battery should be disconnected or removed.
tires
It is best to jack up vehicles so that the wheels are completely relieved and can turn freely. If not possible, increase the air pressure by one bar above normal pressure to prevent tire damage.
