New York was overwhelmed by the Corona crisis in 2020. Pictures of trucks chilling corona dead in front of hospitals will not be forgotten. Now the city wants to react faster. The New York Governor Kathy Hochul (63) declares a state of emergency in response to the Omikron variant. And that before there’s a single proven case in the United States.

The state of emergency allows the New York Department of Health to restrict non-essential and non-urgent hospital treatments in certain situations. The emergency order is intended to increase hospital capacity in New York. It comes into force on December 3rd and should be valid until January 15th at least.

Omikron not yet detected in NY, but “on the way”
The governor said that while the Omicron variant has not yet been proven in New York State, preparations still need to be made. She expects the number of cases to rise.

“In preparation for this, I am announcing urgent steps today to expand hospital capacities and ensure that our hospital systems can cope with the challenges of the pandemic in the winter months,” continues Hochul.

Vaccination continues to be “best weapon”
The vaccine is still one of the “best weapons” in the fight against the pandemic. The governor encourages every New Yorker to get vaccinated and get a booster.

The World Health Organization announced on Friday that the Omicron variant has “a large number of mutations, some of which are worrying”. Switzerland has so far responded to the variant with a flight stop in the countries in which cases have been proven.

Omikron has arrived in these countries
The first cases were discovered on November 11th in Botswana in southern Africa. Three days later, the variant was also registered for the first time in neighboring South Africa. Around 60 cases of B.1.1.529 have now occurred in South Africa.

In Hong Kong, Omicron was found in a man (36) who had returned from a trip from Botswana. In addition, Israel reports one confirmed case and three suspected cases. The infected person returned from the East African state of Malawi, it was said. The variant has now been discovered in Belgium. A first case was registered. (euc)
