GGD: 1 in 7 passengers on flights from South Africa is infected

“At the moment, 110 results are known. Of these, 15 results are positive and 95 results negative,” says a spokesperson. “That means that we take into account approximately 85 positive corona tests in total.”

When the travelers left South Africa, there seemed to be no problem, but during their flight, one country after another closed the borders to flights from the country because of the discovery of a new, possibly much more contagious, corona variant. Once they landed at Schiphol, it took a few hours before they were allowed to leave the aircraft. Finally, they were taken to a secluded room to be tested.

Guarded hotel

Anyone who tests negative can go home, but must be in home isolation. People who test positive are transported to a quarantine hotel, where they must stay for five to seven days. The hotel will be guarded. “The hotel isolation will last seven days for people with complaints and five days for those who have or will not have any health problems,” said a spokesperson.

Tonight, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced that the newly discovered variant has been labeled ‘worrying’. The first research results show that the mutation, which has since been renamed the omikron variant, is spreading much faster than the current variants.

Only in the coming days will it be investigated whether the infected passengers are carrying this omikron variant.
