Emergency physician Luc Beaucourt, famous for his weekend accident campaigns and his medical aid missions around the world, has died of skin cancer at the age of 73.

A relative of the doctor confirmed the death to Gazet van Antwerpen on Friday evening. The emergency physician, widely known for his campaigns against weekend accidents and his emergency response to disasters, turned 73.

Luc Beaucourt grew up in Sint-Amandsberg, near Ghent. He ended up in Antwerp as a medical student. There he lingered.

From 1983 Beaucourt was head of the emergency department at UZ Antwerp. There he had the idea to send a mobile emergency group (mosquito) on the road in case of medical emergencies. He realized this project in 1985. He was also the man behind the medical intervention plan for Antwerp.

In the 1990s, he personally took up the fight against weekend accidents, with 8,000 school lectures in which he showed confrontational images.

Beaucourt was awarded the decoration of Officer of the Order of Leopold by the then government in 2014 in recognition of his work.
